Pragues Historic Landmarks

Few capital cities in all of Europe can boast the number of historic landmarks that Prague offers. Visitors to this capital city of the Czech Republic can stop by dozens of Prague landmarks that date back centuries. The concept of “old” here is far different than it is in the Western world.

Maybe it’s the sheer number of intriguing Prague landmarks, but this capital city, known to many as the Golden City, is seeing its tourism numbers explode. More than 4.5 million tourists visited Prague – undoubtedly attracted by the city’s rich history, thriving nightlife and amazing restaurants – in 2008.

If you plan on becoming one of the millions, take time to research the many Prague landmarks before you head to the city. This advance research will guarantee that you won’t miss out on any of Prague’s must-see historical sights.

There’s the Narodni Divadlo, for instance. The ceremonial foundation stone for this national theater was laid way back on May 16, 1868. The theater then opened in June of 1881. Unfortunately, just two months later, a raging fire destroyed its magnificent copper dome, stager and auditorium.

The Czech people, though, were resilient. They took just 47 days to raise 1 million florins to pay for the theater’s repairs. The Narodni Divadlo reopened to the public on Nov. 18, 1883. It hosted a performance of famed composer Smetana’s opera Libuse. Today, visitors can tour this neo-Renaissance gem three times a month. Make sure to make a reservation.

The Zofin Palace is another of the many Prague landmarks with impressive histories. Located on Slovansky Island, the palace was built from 1885 to 1887 to honor the Archduchess Sophie, mother of Emperor Franz Josef I. During its long history, this stunning palace has hosted some of the world’s top composers, including Smetana, Liszt and Wagner.

The Cathedral of Sts. Cyril and Methodius is another of the Prague landmarks that tourists must see. Built in the 1730s by King Ignaz Dientzenhofer, this Baroque church saw history in 1942. That’s when seven Czech nationalists had their last stand after their successful assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, the general of police of the Nazi SS.

The nationalists hid in the cathedral’s crypt before emerging on June 18 to find themselves surrounded by hundreds of Nazi soldiers. The Czechs had been betrayed, but they weren’t defeated. Three were shot and killed during the ensuing firefight. The remaining four fought until they were each down to their last bullets. They then turned their guns on themselves.

Many Prague landmarks are equally somber. But the history behind these sights is an important one. Part of the charm of Prague is its people. To better understand them, tourists must first learn the way they have preserved through the ages.

If you would like to see these amazing landmarks yourself then you should have a look at what cheap hotels in prague are available.

Berlin – The Capital of The Modern World

The breathtaking Berlin can’t be described in only certain pages. The German capital can suggest much more than what an excursionist may experience in one or even two weeks of vacation. To have a somewhat proper idea about Berlin, it is enough to say that it has a surface of approximately 900 square kilometers, it receives 850.000 visitors annually and hosts 172 museums and palaces, 50 theaters, over 200 clubs and discotheques, 3 zoos, tens of lakes, beaches, parks, art galleries, operas and malls.

From a touristic point of view, Berlin is the dream of any person who has a fondness for traveling. This capital is the European metropolis with the richest history but also with the most fulminant revival. The city, shocked after the Second World War, disturbingly affected by the Berlin Wall and the divided administration, finds itself for 18 years in a tough process of rebirth, reinvention and renovation. Today, the capital of Germany represents one of the most influential world centers of fun, music, tolerance, culture, art and tourism.

In Berlin you can find anything you need in order to savor the perfect vacation. The two rivers that cross the city (Spree and Havel) also form a lovely collection of small lakes which were transformed by the local administration into calm beaches. Over the River Spree there are a lot of terraces and bars, restaurants and clubs. Ships and all types of boats are scheduled regularly, therefore constituting a solid delight for amateur tourists. The possibilities of exploring the city are extremely seductive. You can appeal to the easiest method: along with a competent guide you can start inspecting the city on foot. But you may also choose other options. In Berlin there are grouped tours of the city. Because Berlin has hundreds of miles of bike lanes, my specific recommendation would be to take a two-wheeled tour of the city. A boat ride – with the help of a tour guide – could be another possible alternative.

Sights of Berlin must be sorted according to preferences. Therefore, a thorough documentation before departure is advised. However, one thing is sure – no matter what type of vacation you choose – whether is cultural, artistic, for relaxation, for fun or mixed – you have all the chances in the world to spend some of the most appealing and entertaining days here.

There are many attractions that you should see while visiting Berlin. This capital has over 170 museums and palaces, more than enough for an art lover. The Museuminsel is the most significant museum complex in Germany (found on the UNESCO World Heritage List) – it hosts 5 different museums, visited year after year by more than 800.000 tourists.

The Pergamom Museum is Berlin’s most visited museum, mostly due to the fact that it hosts 3 outstanding art collections – the Antique Collection, the East Museum and the Islamic Art Collection.

Checkpoint Charlie is the most appropriate place for those trying to discover some of Berlin’s hidden history. Here you will see photo exhibitions, movies and you will be able to take part in unique meetings between those who were witnesses or those who played an influential role in the shatter of the Berlin Wall.

The History Museum is hosted inside an extremely large but interesting palace, built in a Baroque style. Zeughaus was initially built in 1695, by the order of Frederick III. Up until the beginning of the 20th century it served as an Arsenal and a Military Museum. In the Second World War, the palace was almost completely destroyed by bombings. It was reconstructed and since 1990 it hosts permanent art and history galleries.

The Charlottenburg Palace was erected at the end of the 17th century by Frederick III, as a summer residence for his wife, Sophie Charlotte. The palace, opened for public six days per week, astonishes the tourists with its beauty and its decorations. It deserves to be and you should have at least some hours to spare if you want to see all that it has to offer.

The Egyptian Museum is one of the most famous museums with this thematic in the entire world. Here you can find the impressive bust of Nefertiti, 3000 years old, as well as the Papyrus Collection which includes hundreds of ancient Egyptian elements.

Berlin is one of Europe’s most important capitals when it comes to tourism, art and history. Book a room at Berlin Mark Apart and enjoy a great vacation in the beautiful German capital.

St Paul’s Cathedral with its Iconic Dome Dominates the London Skyline

St Paul’s Cathedral, with its world-famous Dome, is a popular tourist attraction in London. You can enjoy the cathedral’s exquisite interior, and uncover fascinating stories about its history.

Explore St Paul’s for yourself and try out the acoustic quirks of the Whispering Gallery, climb up 85 metres to the Golden Gallery and enjoy breathtaking, panoramic views of the capital and many London attractions, or take a quiet moment to reflect and contemplate. A visit to St Paul’s will be an experience you will treasure forever.

St Paul’s was founded in 604AD. However, the present building, the fourth on the site, was built between 1675 and 1710. It is the second largest cathedral in the world, after St Peter’s in Rome. Construction did not start until about 9 years after the Great Fire in 1666, which destroyed the previous structure. This earlier building, started in 1087, took 200 years to build and was even bigger than the present building, which took 35 years to complete.

The cathedral is the most famous work of London’s greatest architect, Sir Christopher Wren (who was buried in it). However, the delay of 9 years in the building of St Paul’s Cathedral was due to the initial building design not meeting with Royal approval.

Other famous people who were buried in St Paul’s included Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington (whose monument took 56 years to complete) and Sir Winston Churchill.

The cathedral miraculously survived the Blitz in World War Two when most of the surrounding area was flattened by German bombing raids.

In 1981, the Royal wedding of Charles and Diana took place here.

In front of the cathedral there are some wooden posts representing the last City toll gate, built in the thirteenth century. They mark the old route to Cheapside. The “gate” is now opened only during ceremonial occasions.

Hotels near St Paul’s Cathedral are conveniently placed for other attractions such as:

* Mansion House, a rare surviving Georgian town palace, providing the Lord Mayor of the City of London with living, working and entertainment space. The construction started in 1739 and Sir Crispin Gascoigne was the first Lord Mayor to take up residence in 1752. This stylish Mansion House is the venue for city functions such as business meetings, dinners and banquets.

* The Monument was built between 1671 and 1677 to commemorate the Great Fire of London and to celebrate the rebuilding of the City of London. The fire broke out in a baker’s house in Pudding Lane on 2nd September 1666 and uncontrollably spread and destroyed a huge area of the city. It was finally extinguished four days later on the 5th September 1666. The Monument stands at 61 metres tall and provides a fascinating view of the City.

* The Barbican Centre is Europe’s largest multi-arts and conference venue. It has a diverse range of art, music, theatre, dance, film and education events. The London Symphony Orchestra has its home at the Barbican Centre. It provides entertainment for the convenience of the local residents as well as people working in the City.

* The Bank of England Museum tells the story of the Bank of England from its foundation in 1694 to its role today as the United Kingdom’s central bank. Learn more about the current role of the Bank  – setting rates to keep inflation low, issuing banknotes and working with others to keep the financial system stable. There are many events and activities there including the taking of an audio tour and lifting of a genuine gold bar. Admission is free.
