Kitchen Negligence Kills Tourists Holiday Accident Claims on the Increase

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Many recent arrivals to a foreign destination will experience a ‘funny tummy’, a digestive complaint which is best known as a ’stomach upset’. Although this type of illness is generally not dangerous, it can ruin a sufferer’s holiday, and lead to hospitalisation for complications such as dehydration. Scientific research about the breeding patterns of bacteria has led health experts to call into question stomach bugs which arise on the first two days of a vacation overseas. The immune system of an everyday UK citizen is unaccustomed to foreign germs. Exposure to harmful bacteria through contaminated food or water can spark a sudden, explosive sickness. Yet some researchers now believe that for people becoming ill in the first few days of their holiday, there might be a less exotic explanation.

With the cost cutting approach of low cost airlines, many short haul flights have discontinued serving meals. Eating in the airport has become more fashionable, and numerous people eat a complete meal in the departure lounge cafe to to give them the get-up-and-go for their flight. The food is often buffet style, and is left sweating under hot lights. For individuals taking an early morning flight, the hushed airport means that food could have been there for many hours. I paid for eat as much as you like said Tony from Winchester, but I asked for my money back. When I got to the buffet there were 3 flies on the sausages. I felt ill, and in all likelihood would have been, if I d eaten the meal. Whilst foreign microbes do pose a danger to the digestive systems of UK tourists, people falling sick during the beginning three days of their stay, should visit the doctor to find out the roots of the problem. As Tony revealed, it might be closer to home than you believe.

Golfing Holidays in Spain – The Magic of Spain Golf Holidays

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Golfing holidays in Spain – the very phrase evokes a delightful image of long green fairways under a warm sun. Golf may have been invented in cold, misty Scotland but it’s best enjoyed under sunny blue skies. And where better than in Spain? Not only does Spain promise year-round sunshine, it’s also home to some of the country’s – indeed Europe’s – best golf courses.

So where are the best golf courses to be found? The fact is you can find golf courses all over Spain. Many are in the tourist haunts of the Costa del Sol and the Algarve. Like so many places on the tourist trail, they tend to be crowded, poor value and lacking in the charm you’ll find in other parts of the country.

If you want to play golf in a real Spanish setting far from the crowds, head for the Costa Almeria in eastern Andalucía. This is one of Spain’s best kept golfing secrets and it’s clear to see why.

For one thing, it’s in the country’s driest province. Andalusia is graced with over 3000 hours of sunshine a year. That means you’re guaranteed a game of golf in the dry pretty much anytime.

Another factor in choosing this part of the country is that life in the Costa Almeria moves to a more relaxed rhythm that the frenetic holiday towns of the Costa del Sol or the Algarve. It’s less crowded and prices are reasonable not being geared towards tourists. Almeria is as beautiful as any part of Spain and offers its own charm reflected in the ancient villages and long gorgeous coastline.

Best of all for the golfer, Almeria has some of the most distinguished golf courses in Spain. Extensive golf course development has been carried out in recent years and many more courses are planned for the future. Currently, Almeria is home to nine quality golf courses. They are La Envía Golf & Spa Resort, Playa Serena, Alboran and Golf Almerimar in the south, and Aguilon, Desert Springs, Marina Golf, Macenas Golf & Beach Resort and Valle del Este in the north. Each has its own unique characteristics. For example, Desert Springs is Europe’s only Arizona desert style golf course and the spa resort of La Envia is a veritable oasis.

All of Almeria’s golf courses are convenient for resorts and the whole area is served by Almeria International Airport. It’s less than an hour’s drive away and offers regular, scheduled and budget flights from most UK airports.

When playing golf in Costa Almeria, you are participating in the relaxed Spanish lifestyle. Plus, you have the pleasure of being in an area of great natural beauty. You can tee off to dramatic vistas of shore and coastline. And they don’t stand on ceremony here. You can play all year round dressed in shorts and a t-shirt. The infrastructure’s there, too, in the form of shops, bars, hotels, cafes, restaurants and all the other facilities you could need.

Of course, golf is not all the region has to offer. After your 18 holes, you can head off to a tapas bar and feast on local snacks washed down with the local tipple. Later you can head off to a music bar or disco. You can also sample a rich and ancient culture in the art galleries and museums. In short, you’ve got the recipe for perfect golf holidays in Spain with the Costa Almeria being the perfect year round golf holiday destination.

So whether you’re on holidays in Spain or whether you’ve decided to acquire your own Spain property, golfing in Spain is one of the country’s great pleasures. The next time you’re looking for a golf holiday in the sun, forget the overrun golfing regions of the Costa del Sol. Instead look into spending your next golf holiday in Almeria.

If you fall under the spell of Spain, you’ll be happy to find that great property deals are another of the country’s charms. Spain propery comes in all types and price ranges. For example, you’ll find quality resorts near all the golf courses and investing in a home here will allow you to live in this golfing haven whenever you please.

Celebrate the year of the Tiger with Birmingham’s Chinese New Year

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Often called the Lunar New Year by native Chinese and Taiwanese, the Chinese New Year is the turning of the year, beginning on the first day of the month and finishing on the 15th. A festival that is centuries old and gaining each year in tradition and mythology, the essence of the festivities is the focus on what individual people believe in, how they behave and what they would like to see from the year ahead.

Right across the globe, wherever there is a substantial Chinese community, there will be Chinese New Year celebrations followed by a major holiday, with countries neighbouring China quite often joining in the season too, from Bhutan and Korea to Japan and Hong Kong.

After the great success of 2009’s celebrations, Birmingham’s 2010 Chinese New Year looks set to come back bigger than ever before. The year of the Tiger, 2010, marks the 4708th year of the Chinese calendar, and will be celebrated throughout Birmingham by the extensive Chinese community as well as thousands of other revellers, as the celebrations start with a bang as an extravagant dragon and lion dancing parade will march down Hurst Street under a shower of firecrackers.

More stalls than ever before will line the street, where visitors can browse during the day, before night-time brings with it a programme of acrobatic and cultural displays and performances to amaze the crowds and celebrate ceremonial tradition. 2010’s festival is sponsored by Lebara Mobile and, with their help, one of the oldest celebrations in the world will run side by side with similar Chinese New Year celebrations right across the UK, from London to Manchester.

The tiger is the twelfth Chinese zodiac sign, with people born under it generally being well liked and charismatic and this will be reflected in the diverse and enjoyable programme of events that will run throughout the festival. Free to the public, the varied programme this year includes, amongst many other things, opening speeches at the Arcadian Centre just after the Dragon Dance, followed by the Welcoming of the Chinese God of Wealth. Later on, there will be dramatic Kung Fu demonstrations, children’s dance classes, Dragon Pole dances and many interactive classes and opera performances, where festival goers can take part in ancient traditions.

With the help of the Birmingham Chinese Festival Committee and the Birmingham City Council, this year’s Chinese New Year looks set to be the best yet, and many luxury hotels in Birmingham are offering special deals to welcome visitors to take part in the city’s seasonal festival.

Visiting the Unique Landscape of Iceland

Monday, January 25th, 2010

If you’re the sort of person who shies away from sun, sea and sand holidays where the main activity of choice is laying on the beach and slowly cooking yourself, the chances are you’ll be looking for something a little more adventurous while searching for your next holiday away. Although beautiful in their own way, beach holidays can be boring – they’re monotonous, tiresome and everything remains the same, day in, day out. What you’re probably after is something more exciting, something where your eyes can’t believe what they’re taking in every day – somewhere incredible that you’ll never forget!

Does this sound along the right lines for what you’re searching for? If so, you needn’t look any further for the perfect holiday destination – Iceland awaits! Perhaps considered the direct opposite of your average beach holiday, a visit to Iceland will show you the unique, dynamic landscape you’ve been craving to see. Packed with gigantic glaciers which loom threateningly on the horizon, breathtaking volcanoes which cover an extraordinary amount of land and awe-inspiring waterfalls that capture the imagination, Iceland truly is the adventurer’s holiday destination of choice.

Every day, you’ll be able to take in a new wonder of nature, whether you want to get up close and personal with a glacier as it shapes the land of the future or to take in the beauty of a tumbling waterfall as frosty sheets of water spill from high cliffs into deep, crystal clear plunge pools below. If you’re feeling a little more daring, Iceland has plenty of volcanoes for you to catch a glimpse of – from a safe distance, of course!

If taking in majestic views that will remain with you for a lifetime sounds like your holiday of dreams, it’s certainly worth considering this island gem. Iceland is growing in popularity as a holiday destination and, from the moment you step off your flight, it won’t be difficult to see why. Iceland’s landscape is truly one to be reckoned with and you’ll congratulate yourself for remembering to bring extra camera batteries and memory cards as the chances are you won’t be able to stop snapping!

Of course, such tremendous landscapes deserve equalled indoor accommodation – such as the luxury hotels in Reykjavik which await to ensure you get a great night’s rest before heading off in the morning to explore even more of this breath-taking country.

Bored of the beach? Try Iceland for your next holiday and enjoy a vacation like no other.

Bangkok Hotels – How to Find the Best Hotel Deals

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Finding hotel deals in Bangkok Thailand is much easier these days, especially through the convienece of the Internet. It’s easier to search for budget rooms to hostels and even landing yourself a great deal on luxury hotels in Bangkok. And you’ll save much more money rather then going through a travel agent. But there are so many hotel reservation companies out on the Internet and finding the right one can be quite confusing.

When it comes to searching for hard to find hotel deals in Bangkok we go for the usual suspects like Hotels.com, Priceline.com, Travelocity.com and sorts of other major advertised Internet travel agencies. Because it’s easy and everyone knows about them.

But can they provide the best hotel rates?

It never hurts to check their websites. However, they do not offer the best possible room rates. They work in conjunction with other local hotel room wholesalers. What this means is that most of the biggest online travel agencies like Hotels.com are middle men. And these companies will not offer you the widest selection of hotel options in Bangkok.

How about booking through a hotel company’s website directly?

Again it doesnt’ hurt to check a hotel’s website for room rates. But you’ll find that booking through their website will cost on average 30% to 40% more, compared to an online travel agency.

Where do I go to find hotel deals in Bangkok, Thailand?

The best option is to look for a online hotel reservation company based in Thailand. This way you are going directly to the source for best deals as well as more hotel choices for you to choose.

The reason why Thailand based online travel agencies can provider better rates is because they have offices where local hotels can notify them easily about special rates and promotions. And since they are in the region they are absolutely more knowledgeable about Bangkok hotels then a USA based company like Travelocity.com.

Also it’s good to remember that Thailand’s low season is from late March to early November. During those times you’ll find many hotels throughout Thailand and especially in the city of Bangkok have lowered their rates up to 40%.

Viewpark Hotel Tagaytay: just the place to kick back and chill

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

My little family and I decided to have our end-of-the-year getaway at a little-known place in the quieter part of Tagaytay, away from the busier strip of restaurants, coffee shops and bigger hotels. Little did we know that we’d have one of the best times of our life at ViewPark Hotel Tagaytay, a small hotel with a very big heart and wide welcoming arms.

Just like any experienced traveler, I always research about the places we’d want to check into through the net. ViewPark Hotel’s website (viewparkhotel.com) showed pictures of well-designed rooms (top priority for us!) so we decided to check it out. Personally, I go for the smaller hotels because experience has taught me that this type of boutique hotel, as opposed to the bigger and more formal hotel, seem to try harder in giving guests a warm experience. Somehow, the big name hotels seem a tad cold and too professional.

ViewPark Hotel simply cocooned us with that warm feeling of coming home to a (nicer) house the minute we stepped in their lobby. With a freshwater aquarium filled with beautiful live corals of every shape and color, and friendly staff to welcome guests (without that obsequious or over-the-top servility), we knew we came to the right place.

One of the rooms we saw was the Deluxe Room with a double bed, and the standard room features: cable TV, personal ref., closet, a good-sized bathroom and remote-controlled A/C. What was unusual in this room (which was standard in all the hotel’s eight rooms) is the rainshower head. There are quite a number of hotels that do not feature this more modern bath amenity, for the same room rates. But what adds charm to this room is a wide bay window with cushioned window seats and plump throw pillows. Perfect for surfing the worldwide web — which was a joy, thanks to their fast internet connection.

The room we eventually got met my picky daughter’s approval, having two double beds, bigger space and of course, a bigger TV. The Superior Twin Room even has a balcony with its own table and chairs – nice for winding down with your evening coffee or enjoying the early morning (cold) breeze.

ViewPark Hotel also has rooms for those on a budget, and for below 2,000 pesos, you’d get the same personalized and warm service. It has its own cozy restaurant, Red Lemon Grill which serves local and continental dishes, as well as Adam’s Café, a coffee and snack bar with outdoor tables. Good masseuse service can also be arranged right in the privacy of your hotel room.

But really, the charm of this hotel lies in the strength of its people. Leading her team of dedicated, multi-taskers is the efficient and bubbly GM Joy Tung. She very humbly pointing out that as far as hotels go, theirs is just “normal”. By that, she means they offer standard rates for good, clean rooms. But when we pointed out that ViewPark Hotel stands out from the rest because, compared to hotels with the same rates, their people go the extra mile. Beyond the friendly faces and genuine smiles, their staff appears magically to offer assistance even before guests think they do need help. And they can be counted on to follow through with requests previously made by the guests. This is the elusive quality that ensures guests (us included) come back.

ViewPark Hotel has been steadily gaining a loyal clientele of couples and families who have made it their Tagaytay getaway. That’s why the movie selection they offer includes classics, new titles and a very wide selection of kid-friendly movies. It’s also why rooms are floored in wood, not the usual tile, so older family members can have warmer floors and kids (and their toys) are less likely to get hurt when the playing gets extra rough. Couples, especially the women, approve of the modern Morocco-European design elements employed in the room — from the headboards to the linens and good quality drapes, even to the Moorish elements of our lampshades (incidentally, my favorite feature in our room). ViewPark Hotel can be counted on to make a special occasion all the more memorable (rose petals everywhere you want during Valentine’s Day, for example). Better yet, they can be your creative partners to collaborate with you and make your honeymoon or anniversary a unique experience.

No wonder ViewPark Hotel guests keep coming back – it’s like a second home in cool Tagaytay, where you don’t have to pay an arm and a leg to chill out and enjoy the warm service from Ms. Joy and her Team.

Ski Report – Heavenly has nearly a foot of the fresh stuff

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

The classic Tahoe dump is happening right now. It’s the kind of snowfall that will be recalled for years to come in a litany of tall tales that start with “Do you remember the snow of January 2010?”

A series of winter storms that began during the Martin Luther King holiday on January 17 delivered a couple of feet of snow to Lake Tahoe’s highest peaks and nearly a foot at lake level. But that’s just the beginning. As the week progresses, the storms are expected to become more ferocious, with colder temperatures and more precipitation. By Saturday, the Sierra crest will most likely have 10 feet of fresh snow. Forecasters are expecting this to be the most snow-producing series of storms the Sierra has seen in the last five years. It looks like El Niño is here to stay for the rest of January.

As of Tuesday, January 19, Alpine Meadows, Boreal, Northstar-at-Tahoe, Kirkwood, and Squaw Valley are reporting more than 20 inches of new snow. Sugar Bowl and Sierra-at-Tahoe are reporting 18 inches, and Heavenly has nearly a foot of the fresh stuff. So far this year the Tahoe resorts with the deepest snowpacks—all greater than 80 inches–are Alpine Meadows, Kirkwood, Squaw Valley, and Sugar Bowl.

The southern Sierra is enjoying the benefits of the same weather pattern. Mammoth Mountain reports 33 inches of new snow since the week began, and boasts a base of up to 90 inches. Nearby June Mountain has received a foot of fresh snow. The eastern Sierra above 7,000 feet is expected to have 5 to 7 feet of new snow by late Saturday.

The strongest weather is expected to arrive late today, with heavy precipitation and high winds carrying over into Thursday. After a break on Friday and Saturday, more snow is expected on Sunday.

Resorts are taking advantage of this gift from the skies by offering deals to intrepid skiers who are willing to make their way through the whiteout to the mountains. Kirkwood Resort is offering a “book two nights, get one night free” deal through January 28 . Sugar Bowl Resort has a $99 midweek special rate at its historic snowbound lodge, accessible only by riding a mile-long gondola, as well as 25 percent off all two-night weekend stays. The locals’ favorite, Homewood Resort, is selling $39 lift tickets Monday through Thursday.

Squaw Valley USA offers an outstanding deal for families: kids 12 and under ski for only $10 every day. Adults who ski at Squaw more than a couple times per season–but not often enough to warrant buying a season pass–will want to join the resort’s Frequent Skier Club. Register online for $5 and after you have purchased four all-day lift tickets, you get a fifth day of skiing free.

Northstar-at-Tahoe is encouraging skiers to stay longer and ski more with its quad pack lift tickets, enabling visitors to ski or ride any four days this season for less than $63 per day. Northstar also has stay-and-ski packages for $108 per person, based on double occupancy in its studio condos (www.northstarattahoe.com). Intermediate to expert adult skiers and riders can also take advantage of free two-hour lessons every weekday at 1:30 p.m. (meet at the top of Northstar’s Comstock Express Chairlift).

Local businesses are also getting into the action. The hip Cedar House Sport Hotel in Truckee is offering an extended weekend deal–guests pay for two nights and get the third night free (www.cedarhousesporthotel.com). The Stanford Alpine Chalet has a midweek ski special Sunday to Thursday nights, with 20 percent off lodging and lift tickets to Alpine Meadows.

If you are driving to the Sierra, don’t forget to carry chains in your car, even if you have a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Chains can be made mandatory at any time at spots like Carson Pass summit, and the highway patrol will turn you away if you don’t have them. For up-to-date chain control and road information in California, visit www.dot.ca.gov. For information about Nevada roads.

And always make sure to call our travel experts at 1.800.SKIRESORTS (800.754.7376) for any resort info or travel-related questions.

Thorough ski report to help you find the top places to go skiing in the state, as well as weather conditions and other variables on your next ski trip. This is a great way to find out which resorts offer the best deals. Hopefully this ski report – heavenly will help you get a big head start on your next trip and give you the info you need to save some serious cash.
