Enjoy A Seasonal Break In Edinburgh

Going to Edinburgh is a good decision at any time of the year, but when Christmas is drawing ever closer and you have presents to buy for the whole family, it can be a good excuse to get away for a couple of days and get your shopping done too.

Edinburgh is a city transformed at this time of year. One of the most famous additions to the city which pops up towards the big day itself is the German Christmas Market. Any kind of market is always worth a look but this one is unmissable – it has all the sights and smells of a traditional German market. In fact it is perfect if you need warming up with a bite to eat before continuing with your shopping.

One of the key streets in the city for shopping is Princes Street. This is wonderfully positioned as it has the Princes Street Gardens on the other side of the road, leading up to the magnificent Edinburgh Castle beyond. There cannot be many other more stunning venues to shop in.

You can also browse round the St James Shopping Centre for those hard to find seasonal gifts, and don’t miss the Royal Mile either for some more unusual shops. Among the delights you can buy here are cashmere sweaters and whisky, which would no doubt delight one or two members of the family!

You will certainly notice the seasonal feel of the city as you enjoy your weekend away before Christmas. There are lots of festive events taking place in the run up to the day itself, so whenever you visit there are sure to be several things going on.

Of course you won’t want to spend the whole time shopping. Make sure you have some downtime as well to make the break truly worthwhile.

One thing that many people choose to do is to go and see a show. There are plenty of theatres dotted around Edinburgh and if you time it right you might even get to see a pantomime. What could be better at this time of year?

There are also plenty of guided tours to help you find out more about this famous city. A popular one each year is the Mary King’s Close tour, which puts on a seasonal version to show you how this time of year would have been celebrated hundreds of years ago in the most run down areas of the city.

All you have to do is choose from the many hotels in Edinburgh that are close to all the best attractions and then you can look forward to seeing some of the city and getting all your Christmas shopping done in one fell swoop.
